The period of controlled export of sugar has been extended by another year

The Center has extended controls on sugar exports for another year.  The center announced that this control, which was introduced last May, will continue till the end of this month.  In a notification issued late on Friday, the central government extended the ban by another year till October 2023.

  • What's the story?

Sugar mills exported a record amount of the product last May.  Because of that, the price of sugar in the country's market is increasing.  To deal with the situation, the food ministry has capped exports at one crore tonnes.  Not only that, the ban said that not even a grain of sugar can be exported without government approval.

The 'Directorate of Sugar' under the Ministry of Food is implementing this control system.  Export requires approval from this directorate.

  • What's next?

Record sugar production is likely this season.  But in spite of this, to control the price of sugar in the country's market, the center may continue to operate this ban even after next year, the concerned circles believe.  According to NSO data, from 2011 to 2020, while sugarcane production in North India increased by 42 percent in value terms, it fell by 32.4 percent in South India.  Since sugar is made from sugarcane, the increase in sugarcane production is likely to increase sugar production.  The sugar mills expect to meet the country's demand in the coming season and there will be a surplus of 80 lakh tonnes of sugar for export abroad.
